En Plein Air 2021 – Day One Twin Trees Festival

The Art of Painting Outdoors

Finally the day arrived and The Twin Trees Heywood Art & Culture Festival 2021 was finally underway, with day one of this year’s Three Day Tutored En Plein Air. After the disappointment of last year’s late cancelation, due to the inclusion of Co. Laois in the local lockdown, it felt very special to see the artists arriving in Ballinakill once again.
It all started shortly after 9am, with registration, and of course lots of amazing coffee at the wonderful Heywood Haven, where we received a lovely friendly welcome!!

The weather of course was the only concern at this stage, as the mist of morning gradually turned to drizzle. But it failed to dampen spirits, and enthusiasm was high as the artists headed for Heywood Gardens, with easels, paints and umbrellas!

Heywood Gardens En Plein Air

Having arrived at the Lutyens designed Heywood Gardens, our En Plein Air artists quickly set about transferring an array of equipment from their cars, and finding their preferred spot amongst the splendour on offer, and then began painting their subject matter.
The rain persisted for a time, despite the day threatening to brighten. Beneath the pleached lime trees became a popular berth, and throughout the sunken garden, colourful umbrellas added to the vibrancy of the beautiful flowers and foliage on display!

The distant hills, however, soon became visible, flecks of blue painted the grey skies, and within  minutes Heywood was basking in glorious sunshine. Coats, hats and brollies were discarded, and the painting began in earnest.
Our tutors, Bridget Flannery and Jock Nichol were busy on their rounds, as they introduced themselves to the artists, giving tips and advice. A wonderful friendly atmosphere permeated the day, as the attendees got to know each other, and in many cases, met up with acquaintances, not seen since our inaugural event in 2019.

A Musical Evening

After a truly productive day, with wonderful artworks produced, the artists made their way back to Ballinakill village, where everyone was warmly welcomed back to Heywood Haven, to wind down with a drink or two, and some delicious food, whilst being entertained by the excellent musicianship of Kieran Roche and Declan Aungier.
It was a beautiful way to end a beautiful day!
